Delicate Baby Wash Cloth

Delicate Baby Wash Cloth

Hook 4.00 mm
Gauge: sport weight yarn

Hint 1: If you want your wash cloth shorter or longer, make the chains divisible by 4 (i.e. 24, 28, 32, etc.) then add 2 extra chains to represent the 1st st. (i.e. 26, 30, 34 chains total). Realize this may make the stripes pattern not begin and end where you want it though. You have to practice with that. Maybe make one and see if they match up, if not, adjust the amount of sc rows and make another one. Fold diagonally to make sure its perfectly square.

Hint 2: Organic soft cotton, sport weight, makes very, very light wash cloths suitable for a baby wash cloth. For a grown up one, a worsted weight or DK weight would probably work the best. I love Lily Soft Cotton Natural worsted. You can get it on a big spool for really cheap at Walmart. Serve ‘em up in groups of 3 with a pretty satin bow and some pretty soap for a gift. Make sure the person you are giving it to appreciates the time it takes to make hand-made gifts.

Hint 3: Chain 3 counts as 1 DC at the beginning of each row.

Hint 4: V-stitch: DC, ch 1, DC, all in the same sc.

Hint 5: If you want it nice and square count your st’s once in awhile to make sure you have 28, preferably at the end of Rows 8 and 9.

Directions:
Chain 30, sc in 2nd chain from hook
Row 1: SC in each chain to the end of chain, ch 1, turn (28 st’s)
Row 2-3: Repeat Row 1
Row 4: Same as Rows 2 and 3 but at the end, ch 3 and turn.

Rows 5-8 make up a pattern sequence. You will be short 1 chain space at the end of Row 5. This is okay. At the end of Row 8, you add one extra chain space so it totals back to 28 for a perfectly square wash cloth: I don’t know a way around this.

Row 5: DC in the very first sc 3 times (total is 4 DC in the first sc). *Skip 3 st’s, sc in the next st, ch 3, 3 dc in the same st; skip 3 st’s. Repeat from * to the last 3 st’s. Skip 2 sts, sc in the last st, ch 3, turn; (That is where you have lost an st you will add back in Row 8). You just made fans of 4 dc’s with 3 sts skipped between each fan.

Row 6: DC in the very first sc (that equals 2 DC), sc in the first ch 3 space; DC in the next SC, ch 1, DC in the same st; *st in the next ch 3 space, DC in the next SC, ch 1, DC in the same st. Repeat from * across, st in the last ch 3 space, ch 3, turn. You just made groups of V-stitches and cinched up Row 5 with sc’s in the 3 chain big spaces. Hint: The sc you dc into during the V-stitch is the one right next to chain 3 space.

Row 7: Repeat Row 5

Row 8: Repeat Row 6 only at the very end before making the last st in the last ch 3 space, add a chain first, then sc in the last ch 3 space. Count and make sure you have 28 st’s. Ch 1, turn

Repeat this whole pattern starting with Row 1. End the wash cloth with 4 rows of the sc pattern. Go around the whole thing in sc with 2 sc’s in each corner.
