Abbreviations
k - knit
p - purl
sl - slip stitch (always with yarn in back)

Materials
4mm knitting needles
100% cotton worsted weight yarn

The Pattern
Cast on 41 stitches
Row 1, 3, 5, and 7: knit
Row 2, 4, 6: purl
Row 8: p 5, sl, 1, *k 5, sl 1, k 1, sl 1, repeat from * 2 more times, k 5, sl 1, p 5
Row 9: k 5, p 31, k 5
Row 10: same as Row 8
Row 11: same as Row 9
Row 12: same as Row 8
Row 13: k 5, p 1, k 5, * p 1, k 7, repeat from * 3 more times, p 1, k 5
Row 14: same as Row 8
Row 15: same as Row 9
Row 16: p 5, sl 1, p 5, * sl 1, p 7, repeat from * 3 more times, sl 1, p 5
Row 17: same as Row 9

Repeat rows 8-17 four more times and 8-12 once more.
Repeat rows 1-7 once more.
Bind off in pattern.

The borders will curl over. If you want a straight flat edge it is necessary to block. Otherwise just use!
